Exes

Exes.

We all have them.

Boyfriends, girlfriends, friend friends.

They linger in our memories, our hearts.

My ex-best friend also lingers at my school.

By a lucky combination of opposite schedules and quick glances away, I've avoided seeing or speaking to her for about three years.

Unfortunately, our schedules are no longer completely opposite, and I am no longer convinced that total avoidance is the best strategy.

I moved on.

I got new friends. I took down all the pictures of us. I convinced myself that I didn't miss her, or need her, or hate her, or feel anything about her.

Right.

Because that's exactly what happens.

Now she keeps popping up.

I have no desire to be her friend, electronically or otherwise. I've been down that path. It didn't work.

However, I don't want to be a jerk. We have a messy past, but that's just it--it's the past.

I guess this is me asking for advice? Or something? Anything?

Well, what you're doing now doesn't sound bad. Offer a smile or a wave if she does, but you don't sound like you're being a jerk. Do you feel convicted about doing something differently? If not, I say just leave it.

Sorry for your loss though! Even if it was a while back, sometimes those memories will still make you sigh.

That's tough stuff.

Always trust your inner voice regarding who you have close to you. High school is hard enough without frienemies.
